West U Place Independence Day parade & pool party
Jul. 04, 2024 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
West University Place Independence Day parade and pool party.  WU Rotary will be sharing a sponsor's booth with the John McKnitt Alexander Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Colonial Park Pool is the location of the party. Set-up of the booth begins at 8:00 a.m.  We will have a computer for flag subscriptions, information on memberships available, and be handing out miniature flags to the children.  We could use Rotarians to staff the booth in one-hour shifts from 9:00 until Noon, and use volunteers to help with set up and take down.

We also need Rotarians to attend the party and bring their families!  The more, the merrier!

Cold drinks will be available to all volunteers.  We will be under the trees at Colonial Park, so there will be some protection from the sun.

The Women's Home Summer Awards Banquet
Aug. 21, 2024 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Hi everyone! On August 21st, we will be hosting the summer awards banquet for The Women's Home. The event will take place at the Mabee Life Center at 1905 Jaquelyn, Houston, TX 77055. Volunteers need to arrive at 4p for setup and the event begins at 6p. We need 6 to 8 volunteers. If you are unable to attend but want to volunteer, there are several opportunities to serve.

The Women's Home is an organization that we have supported for many years, and that support has taken various forms from volunteering at their thrift store, The Cottage Shop, to role playing with soon to be graduates to our annual celebration with the women as some of them graduate from the program and move out into the world of employment and independent living.

Please contact me if you are available to volunteer. Thank you.

Mary Kay Jackson

Rotary and the Provision of Water in Northern Ghana

Sep. 12, 2024 1:01 a.m.

Mary Kay Jackson, the daughter of local Rotarian Dan Clinton, was raised in Houston and holds civil engineering degrees from Texas A&M and Stanford University.  After a brief stint in the oil industry, Mary Kay practiced civil engineering in Atlanta, Georgia, for 20 years designing water infrastructure for municipal clients.

In 2006, Mary Kay moved to Ghana, West Africa, and joined the staff of the Methodist Church Ghana to create their Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) program.  In 2017, she returned to Houston and joined the staff of TMS Global, where she currently is the Director of Strategic Initiatives. She continues to maintain an active water ministry in Ghana.

Over the past 18 years, Mary Kay has constructed 300 boreholes for villages, clinics, and schools in Ghana.  She served for 9 years as the Managing Director of Pure Home Water, a Ghanaian social enterprise that manufactures ceramic pot filters for household water treatment.  During her tenure, Pure Home Water constructed its manufacturing facility and grew from 4 to 25 employees, mostly local women potters. To date, Pure Home Water has provided over 30,000 filters to households in Ghana, including as part of two Rotary grants.

Nurit Gery

Discuss her High School in Israel, Younited.

Sep. 19, 2024 7:01 a.m.
Nurit Gery - Managing Director and Co-Founder of Younited

Nurit is a social entrepreneur who decided to move from a successful career in the commercial world to the nonprofit sector. The catalyst was a three-week volunteering stint with her husband and teenage children at an orphanage in Zimbabwe. This life-changing experience showed her that this was the moment to use the transferable skills from  her extensive commercial and marketing experience to create a project that had the potential to create real, long-term impact both within Israel and beyond.
Younited (formerly GHIS) was envisaged in 2017 and, under Nurit’s leadership and vision, only a year later it opened with a full cohort of local and international students and staff, ready to compete in quality with international schools worldwide.  Partnerships with relevant government agencies, the International Baccalaureate Organization and a handful of donors who understood the value of  this ‘start-up’, ensured that the foundations for quality and sustainability were in place.  Since then, Nurit’s outreach skills and her ability to engage and include people has attracted a network of international partners, friends, volunteers and supporters from  around the world.
Nurit’s commercial work experience spanned Israel and the U.S,  with an emphasis on senior management, marketing and sales, entrepreneurship and business development. Prior to establishing Younited, Nurit worked for 20 years at the pharmaceutical giant, GSK, where she was a Business Unit Director.
Nurit has an MBA from the USF, California  and a BA in Biology from the Technion, Israel.
