West U Rotary Happenings for the week of April 24, 2016 ….

First – I am happy to report we have a new date for our golf tournament. Same place, same time, new date. The new date is Monday, June 6th. So, there is still time to sign up to play or to make a donation. So, mark your calendars and come join us for a great day at Riverbend Country Club. 11:30 lunch and a 1:00 o’clock tee time. The proceeds from this year’s tournament go to the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC) and the West U Rotary Foundation.

Second – It is time for us to make our way to our annual Rotary 5890 District Conference. This year’s conference will be held in Galveston at the San Luis Hotel. We have several members and guests attending the event. There are several activities and it should be a great event for all. Here is a brief list of some of the activities this weekend.
  • Golf tournament on Thursday
  • Service Opportunity – educational supplies for Parker Elementary School
  • Tennis tournament on Friday
  • Gulf Coast Regional Blood Drive on Friday
  • Historic house tour and dinner on Friday (limited space available so please RSVP to Mike Woods)
  • Governor’s Gala on Saturday
  • Hospitality Suites open every night
Third – last week, several of us met at the Brooklyn Athletic Club for our monthly social. Thanks to the committee for organizing. The event was well attended and everyone had a great time. We have two more socials scheduled for this year. Next month we will be kayaking down the Buffalo Bayou. This is always a fun event but space is limited.  Please RSVP to Honey Leveen.

Fourth – we have our last Challenger League dugout duty on Sunday, May 1st.  Please join us in the dugout to serve up some tasty dogs, cold beverages and snow-cones or join us in the stands to cheer the kids on.

Last week, our guest was Andrew Gustafson – the Curator of the Bryan Museum in Galveston (something else to do while in Galveston). The Bryan Museum presents the history of Texas and the western part of the US. Andrew provided interesting information about the museum and the history of the artifacts.
