West U Rotary Happenings for the week of April 3, 2016 ….

Welcome to March madness (version III). This week has been and continues to be is a big event for Houston. The hotels and restaurants have been packed and the weather has been gorgeous! Welcome to our guests! It is a great time of the year in Houston. As always, we will make our friends and guests welcome to wonderful city.

Here are some exciting and entertaining events in Houston over the next few weeks:

29th Annual Art Car Parade - April 9th
Art Blocks: The Big Bash – April 16^th
Keels and Wheels – Seabrook – April 23^rd and 24^th
Bayou City Art Festival – April 29^th – May 1^st

What an amazing city we live in!

Last week, our guest was the first lady of Rock ‘n Roll - Dayna Steele. Dayna discussed the reality of coping with a family who struggled with Alzheimer’s. She discussed how this disease changes a family and how to try to deal with the changing circumstances.

This week, our guest speaker is Erica Skerrett – Global Health Fellow of Rice 360: Institute of Global Health. This group is developing and implementing medical technology that is appropriate for developing countries. Full staff members further develop these technologies and run clinical studies domestically and internationally.

We have several events and activities coming up in the next few weeks. Here is a brief list of the upcoming activities:

It is baseball season and with baseball comes the Challenger League dugout duties. Games are April 10^th, 17^th, 24^th and May 1^st . Come join us in the dugout or in the stands to cheer the kids on.
April 9^th - Book Sorting 10 – 12 in Pasadena. Come join the Interactors sort and palletize books that are distributed to various countries around the world.
April 12^th – West U Senior Services Breakfast. We are looking for volunteers to set up the afternoon before and to prepare / serve the breakfast. Please see Judy Faulkner for details.
April 13^th – our monthly Board meeting at 7 AM at the Merrill House (regularly scheduled for the 12^th but we moved it back a day).
April 18^th – our annual golf tournament at River Bend Country Club benefiting the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC). Please consider sponsoring a hole or making a donation.
April 21^st – our monthly social at the Brooklyn Athletic Club
April 28^th – May 1^st – Rotary 5890 District Conference in Galveston.Book soon as rooms are selling out.
