West U Rotary Happenings for the week of February 28, 2016 ….

Leap year is here again – where we leap right into the political season. Here are some interesting tidbits about leap year.
  • People born on February 29th are called leaplings or leapers.
  • Anthony, TX is the self proclaimed “Leap Year Capital of the World”
  • February 29th also marks Rare Disease Day
  • February is Bachelors Day where women traditionally propose to men
Last week, our special guest Jean West Evans, the Executive Director of the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC) provided an update of some of the activities at EAC including the Clothing Center which WUR will be sponsoring as part of our annual golf tournament on April 18th.  If you are interested in sponsoring or playing in the golf tournament, please go to contact Bob Geary or Geoff Lanceley for details.

This week, our guest is Mary Green, Director of the Hay Center will show how they are empowering foster youth to become successful and productive adults.  . The HAY Center, a program of Harris County Protective Services for Children and Adults, a public/private partnership, provides much needed services to foster youth transitioning to adulthood in our community.
We have several events and activities coming up in the next few weeks. Here is a brief list of the upcoming activities:
  • It is baseball season and with baseball comes the Challenger League dugout duties. Games are March 6th, April 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30 and May 7th. Come join us in the dugout or in the stands to cheer the kids on.
  • March 8th – Monthly Club Board meeting
  • March 12thStrike Out DIPG Bowl-a-thon tournament at Palace Lanes. We have a few teams participating. See Paul Cornett for details.
  • March 15thVeterans Care Packages at Sheltering Arms (we will be collecting toiletry supplies each Thursday leading up to the packing event). See Craig Friou for details.
  • April 12th – West U Senior Services Breakfast. Please see Judy Faulkner for details.
  • April 18th – our annual golf tournament at River Bend Country Club benefiting the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC).
  • April 28th – May 1st – Rotary 5890 District Conference in Galveston.  Book soon as rooms are selling out.
Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
  • You know that tingling little feeling you get when you really like someone you've just met? That's common sense leaving your body.
  • Why do paranoid people check behind shower curtains for murderers: If you find one, what's your plan?

Have a great week. Peace!
