Our Superbowl party was ... well ... super.

DEA Special Agent Joseph Arabit is our guest speaker this week.

West U Rotary Happenings for the week ending February 6, 2016 ….

Superbowl 50  is officially in the history books and fans around the country will start to experience the withdrawals of no more football. It was a fun game and most importantly it was a festive event with great friends and food and fellowship. If you missed our annual Superbowl party you missed a great time. Thanks to Cindy Woods (and Mike) for hosting the event and thanks to everyone for the great food – lots of tasty options. And how about the view of the city? Mike and Cindy definitely win the award for best view of the city. Now, the countdown is on for Superbowl 51 in Houston! The city gets to shine nationally again – with hopefully a few less wardrobe malfunctions than the last time. Maybe the Superbowl will be the incentive the city needs to repair the roads around town.

Last week, our special guest was Hank Moore, the author of “Houston Legends.” Hank, a frequent speaker to our club, discussed some of the most historical and influential Houston power leaders. Hank always has an interesting presentation and this week was no exception.

This week, our guest will be Joseph Arabit – Special Agent in charge of the Houston DEA. Joe will provide our club with an intriguing presentation about the drug industry in Houston and the surrounding region. Houston, do we have a problem?

This past weekend, was the annual RYLA camp. Rotary supports our community youth and RYLA is a fantastic weekend of relationship building. We sponsored several high school students to attend the camp and we look forward to hearing about their experiences.

We have several events and activities coming up in the next few weeks. Here is a brief list of the upcoming activities:
February 8th – monthly board meeting at Paul’s Kitchen 7AM
February 12th – Rotary Firefighters Home Gala – 6PM at the Royal Sonesta hotel. “You were there for us; we are here for you.” This event is sponsored in part by the University Area Rotary Club.
February 13th – Rotary Community Corps – Tame Our Wild Hearts Valentine Soiree at the Holiday Inn Channelview
February 20th – Books for the World book sorting
February 21st – Monthly social at the theater – see Sharon Williams for details
April 18th – our annual golf tournament at River Bend Country Club benefiting the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC).

Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
What was the best thing before sliced bread?

Do cemetery workers prefer the graveyard shift?

Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?

We are still looking for a few volunteers. If you are looking for an opportunity to get more involved in our club, here are a few positions you should consider:
The administrator for the weekly bulletin. We are in need of someone who enjoys dabbling with online media to manage the bulletin. It is a fun job without a big time commitment.
Are you an early riser? We are looking for someone to assist with the set up and take down for the club meetings. This is an important club position without a big time commitment.

Are you interested in participating as a Board member for the West U Rotary Foundation? We will be electing new Foundation Board members in March.

Please let me know if you are interested in serving in any of these important positions.

Have a great week. Peace!
