West U Rotary Happenings for the week ending January 23, 2016 ….

The first month of the new year is almost in the history books. We are at that stage where we no longer regret discontinuing our New Year’s resolutions. The end of football season is near and the soon to be beginning of Spring Training. We would normally be bundled up complaining about how “cold” it is. Instead we are outside enjoying the gorgeous weather – convertibles, biking, jogging and walking the dogs. Maybe all of us haven’t given up on those New Year resolutions just yet.  And the gardeners are chomping at the bit to get started working in the yard. January in Houston, you gotta love it.

We had another fun and different social event this past week. A large group of West U Rotarians and family members met at MFAH to view the Rothko exhibits. It was a great turnout! Thanks to Honey Leveen and the committee for organizing the event. Are y’all enjoying these socials? I am and I hope you are as well – you still have 5 more chances to socialize with your friends and family. They are scheduled on the 21st of every month. Come on out and enjoy the fellowship.

Last week, Ana Schick presented the Small Steps Nurturing Center and discussed several things that they are doing to help serve at risk inner city children.

This week, we continue our theme of helping the inner city youth. Moriah Hollander will discuss Hope for Youth which assists in providing long term mentoring relationships for underprivileged youth ages 11 – 19. Our club member Diane Davis is the chair of this organization that is doing some amazing outreach with local churches to our inner city youth.
We have several events and activities coming up in the next few weeks. Here is a brief list of the upcoming activities:
  • January 30th – Semi Annual Poker Tournament fund raiser in partnership with the River Oaks Rotary Club. Please help us make this a successful fund raiser. We need volunteers, players and prizes. Please consider helping or playing for a few hours this Saturday. Please contact Jack Wallace with questions.
  • February 7th - Superbowl party at Mike Woods
  • February 5th – 7th RYLA Camp for high school students. Lots of fun, lots of laughs and tears, lots of relationship building and not lots of sleep.
  • February 12thRotary Firefighters Home Gala – 6PM at the Royal Sonesta hotel. “You were there for us; we are here for you.” This event is sponsored in part by the University Area Rotary Club.
  • February 13thRotary Community Corps – Tame Our Wild Hearts Valentine Soiree at the Holiday Inn Channelview
  • April 18th – our annual golf tournament at River Bend Country Club benefiting the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC).
Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
  • Doctor to patient: I have good news and bad news. The good news is you are not a hypochondriac.
  • You know how when people see a litter box, they say, “Oh do you have a cat?” Just once, I want to say, “No it’s for company.”
We are looking for a few volunteers. If you are looking for an opportunity to get more involved in our club, here are a few positions you might consider:
  • The administrator for the weekly bulletin. We are in need of someone who enjoys dabbling with online media to manage the bulletin. It is a fun job without a big time commitment.
  • Are you an early riser? We are looking for someone to assist with the set up and take down for the club meeting. This is an important club position without a big time commitment.
  • Are you interested in participating as a Board member for the West U Rotary Foundation? We will be electing 2 new Foundation Board members for 3 year terms. The Foundation Board meets quarterly.
Please let me know if you are interested in serving in any of these important positions.

Have a great week. Peace!
