West U Rotary Happenings for the week of March 13, 2016 ….

This week in history has some interesting events:
  • 137 years ago, Albert Einstein was born
  • 44 years ago, The Godfather debuted
  • 68 years ago Billy Crystal was born – Really?
  • 1555 years ago St Patrick died and we have been searching for the lucky four leaf clover ever since
  • 3 days ago Frank Parrilla rolls the highest score in DIPG bowling tournament
This past weekend 11 Rotarians and spouses participated in the 1st official DIPG bowling tournament benefiting children impacted this aggressive cancer. Over 200 people including a local celebrity gathered at Palace Lanes in support of the children and families who have been impacted by this serious disease. Thank you, Paul Cornett for all your efforts in making this a successful event and thanks to all who participated in or donated to the event.

This week, we have yet another opportunity to impact peoples’ lives. This week, West U Rotarians partner with Sheltering Arms to prepare care packets for our Veterans. The care packets will include personal hygiene items and will be distributed to local Veterans.

Last week our very special guest was Sally McCandless – presenting a fantastic overview of her amazing 500 mile Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage? Sally had a great story and many beautiful photos. Not only did Sally complete the journey, but she completed it ahead of schedule. 10 miles a day was just not enough! Good luck Sally on your next journey.

Does anyone enjoy classic cars or classic boats? This year, in April – car and boat enthusiasts from all over the country will gather in Seabrook to view some incredible muscle cars and racing runabouts for the 21st annual Keels and Wheels. (Hmm, 21 years in April – sounds a little familiar). Bob Fuller – Concours Chairman will present a little history and a lot of present about this event that benefits the Boys and Girls Harbor.

We have several events and activities coming up in the next few weeks. Here is a brief list of the upcoming activities:
  • It is baseball season and with baseball comes the Challenger League dugout duties. Games are April 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30 and May 7th. Come join us in the dugout or in the stands to cheer the kids on.
  • March 15thVeterans Care Packages at Sheltering Arms (we will be collecting toiletry supplies each Thursday leading up to the packing event).
  • April 12thWest U Senior Services Breakfast. We are looking for volunteers to set up the afternoon before and to prepare / serve the breakfast. Please see Judy Faulkner for details.
  • April 18th – our annual golf tournament at River Bend Country Club benefiting the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC).
  • April 28th – May 1stRotary 5890 District Conference in Galveston.  Book soon as rooms are selling out.
Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
  • What lies at the bottom of the ocean and twitches? A nervous wreck.
  • What do you call a boomerang that doesn’t work? A stick.
  • A 3 legged dog walks into an Old West saloon and says: “I’m lookin’ for the man who shot my paw.”
On that note, have a great week. Peace!
