West U Rotary Happenings for the week of March 27, 2016 ….

Welcome to March madness (version II). This weekend is a big event for Houston. Players and fans from all over the country come together to enjoy our beautiful city (and beautiful weather). Welcome to our guests! Did anyone in the country pick these final 4 teams?  I doubt it but it will be a fun tournament. It is a great time of the year in Houston.  As always, we will make our friends and guests welcome to wonderful city.

Here are some interesting facts and trivia of our city:
  • 180 years ago, the Allen brothers founded the city on the banks of Buffalo Bayou
  • In 1850 the population of Houston was 2,396 and in 2010 the census bureau listed the population at 2.1 (with another 2 million in the surrounding communities)
  • More than 145 languages are spoken in the Houston area
  • Houston has over 40 colleges, universities and institutions
What an amazing city we live in!

Last week our guest speaker was our own Carol Lester (Good morning, Carol!) Carol entertained the club with a great presentation to the club about how to be a better mentor. As key club contacts for our newest members, the mentors hold very important roles of helping our new members feel welcome and comfortable with our club and with Rotary. I believe we all learned some important information  on how to be a better mentor. Thank you Carol for a great presentation!

This week, our special guest will be Dayna Steele. For those of us who have lived in Houston for 20+ years will remember Dayna as a radio DJ for KLOL – the first lady of rock ‘n roll. Dayna will talk about the reality of living with a family member struggling with Alzheimer’s – her testimony of how a disease transformed her friendly, lively, lovable mother into … well … a different person who Dayna no longer recognized. Please join us for what should be an amazing discussion.

  • April 28th – May 1stRotary 5890 District Conference in Galveston.Book soon as rooms are selling out. It is going to be a great weekend.
Words of “wisdom” to think about this week:
  • By the time a man realizes his father was right, he has a son who thinks he is wrong.
  • If a tuxedo is evening wear, what is a suit of armor? Silverware.(Really?)
Have a great week. Peace!
