West U Rotary Happenings for the week of May 1, 2016 ….

Another District Conference is officially in the history books and I just want to say THANK YOU WEST U ROTARY!!!! Thanks to everyone who attended any of the events over this past weekend. We had 22 members and 11 spouses and one of our exchange students show in Galveston for at least one event. What a fantastic showing of support for our club. THANK YOU!
Several West U Rotarians deserve special recognition.
  • Ronnie Hallenberger for participating in the District Conference Committee. Ronnie did a great job organizing and planning the event.
  • Stacy Brevard and hubby Alan (from CyFair RC) hosted our hospitality suite for 3 nights in a row. (Alan just so happened to win Best Club President for a mid-size club. Congrats Alan! Job well done.) Thanks for hosting such a fun weekend.
  • Our own Frank “Mix Mast’r” Parrilla provided hours of old school and dance music for our hospitality suite. No suite had the dancing to the tunes going on like our suite.
  • And what a cool time we had Friday evening. Special thanks go to Ken and Rebecca Walker and Mike and Cindy Woods (and Mike’s sister) for hosting an evening of southern hospitality. We had the honor of visiting Ken and Rebecca’s beautiful home followed by a brief tour through one of the Galveston historic districts and concluded with a fabulous dinner at Mike Woods sister’s home. What beautiful homes! Thank you again for opening your homes to us.

In addition we had 2 members of our club win very special honors.
  • Ronnie Hallenberger was nominated to chair the District Governor Nominating Committee for RY 2019 – 2020.
  • Another one of our members was presented with a most special honor. The Citation for Meritorious Service is presented to a member who has performed outstanding active to The Rotary Foundation for more than one year (probably closer to 10+ years). This is one of the highest honors bestowed to an individual in the District by TRF. This is the first year the recipient in our District was not a Past District Governor. Who won this very special recognition? Well I guess you will just have to attend our next meeting to learn who the winner is. I’ll just say West U is the winner as is District 5890. Congratulations to our winner!
  • Ken Walker also deserves special recognition for his involvement with the Galveston Seafarer’s Center. WUR partnered with Galveston Island RC to purchase blinds for their windows. The Seafarers Center is very appreciative of the new window blinds.

So, thank you again to everyone in our club who made this a fun weekend. I hope everyone who attended enjoyed themselves. See you in Conroe next year!

Other activities going on with our club this week:
We wrapped up another fun Challenger League season this past Sunday. Thanks to Dick Cancelmo for his leadership and to all the club members who participated in dugout duty or who came out to watch the kids play ball.

This week, we have our Red Badge dinner scheduled for Tuesday May 3rd at Baba Yega’s to honor and celebrate our newest club members.
Next week on the 10th, we will be hosting our Paul Harris Society (PHS) dinner at Union Kitchen to thank our club members who have committed to contributing $1,000 each year to The Rotary Foundation.

This week we host our annual Vocation Awards presented by Sharon Williams. Each year we recognize an educator of the year and Vocational Rotarian and Non Rotarian of the year. Also Lara Knigge – our Rotary Youth Exchange student from Germany will present her year in review. Come join us for a fun filled meeting.
