West U Rotary Happenings for the week ending November 21, 2015 ….

Howdy all! I woke up this morning to 38 degrees. Nice! Well, it is just a few days before December so I guess we should have at least a couple of cold days before the holidays start.  We are officially starting the glutton season.  Based on watching the number of times my coworkers are dipping into the candy jar (from Halloween) I would say we are well into the glutton season. This is the fun time of the year when we spend great time with friends and family and reflect on our blessings. Only 32 shopping days left.

Last week we briefly outlined category 2 of the Presidential Citation – Foundation Giving. We are certainly fortunate to be part of such a great organization and a great club with so many members who jump in to assist in different ways including service time and of course Foundation Giving. Thanks to everyone in our club who offer so much of their time and talent.
This week we will highlight the areas under category 3 – Online Tool Adoption:
  • Online Tool Adoption (we must achieve 2 out of 4)
    • Have at least 50 percent of the club members registered in My Rotary.
    • Post at least one initiative on Rotary Showcase.
    • Maintain a project in need of assistance on Rotary Ideas or contribute to a project on Rotary Ideas.
    • Have at least two club members participate in Discussion Groups on My Rotary.
Next week we will highlight Humanitarian Services.
Last week our guest speaker was Stuart Kensinger – Director of Kids4 Peace.  Stuart presented to us the accomplishments his organization is making to bring youth from various cultural backgrounds together to discuss cultural conflict and inspire hope in societies around the world. Through a network of local chapters, Kids4Peace operates five international summer camps and a six-year, year-round program for more than 250 Palestinian, Israeli and North American youth. To learn more about the fantastic work this organization is doing towards strengthening multi cultural communities, please go to: www.K4P.org.

On Saturday, several of our club members participated in the Polio Plus Society Dinner with special guest Susanne Rea the Founder of The World’s Greatest Meal for Polio and recipient of International Service Award at the 2015 Rotary International Convention in Sao Paolo. Thanks to everyone in our club who helped set up and / or attended the event.

On Sunday, we participated in our monthly Social. Details of this fun event will be included in next week’s letter. Thank you Gene and Kathryn for your hospitality.
Here is a list of our upcoming activities:
  • November 26th – Annual Turkey Trot 5K fun run. Katie Scott is looking for volunteers to assist with the fun run. We will be wrapped up with the event by mid morning so still plenty of time to get back home and help prepare the Thanksgiving meal. Please consider volunteering for this event.
  • December 10th – lots of activity including the Blood Mobile and our Holiday dinner at Damians
As a reminder, there is no meeting this week. Enjoy your Thanksgiving and we’ll see you next week on December 3rd.
Enjoy the week and I hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family or friends. I look forward to seeing everyone next week. Have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving.

Peace!
